Sneak Peak

Saturday is the day when I put orders aside, business to-do’s on hold and focus on creating.  And yesterday I was prolific – got 3 big pieces done and 10 original art cards/ACEOs.

So since I’m having trouble coming up with content, I’ll give you a sneak peek ahead of my whimsical Wednesday post and show you the ACEOs I did yesterday.

But as they are pin-up re-creations and being that it’s a holy day, you just might have to say a couple Hail Mary’s after viewing.

They are wicked, naughty and fun.  Love pin-ups.  They make me giggle.

Friday Shop Update

I’ve got some exciting shop news going on this week.

First, I just learned that my Gratitude Mosaic will be included in an upcoming issue of Cloth, Paper, Scissors, a magazine that’s popular with mixed media artists.  This one I didn’t even submit to but my photo was found and the Asst. Editor liked the message behind it.  I gifted it to my sister to help remind her to count blessings when things get tough and to “Grow Flowers of Gratitude in the Soil of Prayer”

Then I also got word this week that my Heartsy deal was approved and will be featuring sometime in July…I’ll be sure to let you know when that is, but keep in mind it’s a one day deal only (like Groupon) so if you want to get in on the deal, check back often or subscribe so you don’t miss out!

And then I’ve got another wholesale account in the works which contributes to a big goal of mine for this summer, especially getting into local boutiques/shops.

It’s all been busy but good!  And here’s what’s new in the shop this week (mostly new options of older images, but I’ve got some previously unreleased originals newly listed as well as a fun new circus-inspired box set):

Whimsical Wednesday: How ’bout some coffee and cake?

Several months ago, I shared a post about the different steps I take in creating a mixed media “girl”.  And in this post, I talked about all the girls I sketched while visiting my elderly in-laws in February (I still have about a dozen of those girls to paint out!).

However, when it comes to coffee and cake, sometimes I shoot from the hip and just spontaneously create.  Most times, however, I refer to my journal where I sketch ideas down so I’m not twirling my hair for an hour before I decide which direction to go.  Here is an example of some rudimentary coffee sketches I have in my journal…

And today, this lil’ sketch

turned into this:

As for cakes, well I’m still on a cupcake kick and even sketched a whole bunch of ideas the other night while watching TV in bed.

And churned out 3 pieces, including this guy (still a little bumpy from still being wet…wanted to photograph before I lost light!)

And so that I force myself to spend more time on art, I’ve decided to do a collage a day project on small ACEO (art cards) similar to the pin-up cards I did a couple weeks back.  Because these are so small (2.5 x 3.5), I can prep backgrounds ahead of time and churn out one in less than 15 minutes.  I already prepped a hundred of them so that I can quickly work on them and continue to try new techniques (these being eco-friendly, recycled, acid-free chipboard):

Whimsical Wednesdays: 2 new girls!

Well, actually 3 if you count both girls in this piece about Sisters:

This is actually very reminiscent of my sister and I (where else would I draw inspiration from?) – I’m the dark-haired, dark-skinned, dark-eyed one on the left.  My sister?  Yup – she’s light-skinned, blond hair and green eyed.  Sometimes people who see us together wonder how we’re related…others see the eyes and smile and make the connection.

I originally sketched out these sisters in February when I was in Florida, but didn’t actually paint/collage it out until Saturday when I got a sudden urge to paint.  As in, stop what you’re doing, put the laptop down and start painting!  It comes in waves like that.

And here’s another girl I created that same night (and was also a sketch from February).  I am a recovering perfectionist and so this piece speaks to my (as well as many others) struggle with the need to be perfect.  Good enough is well, good enough!  And my stress level is much lower as a result, thank goodness.

Whimsical Wednesday – new girl finally!

Well, it’s 11 pm and nearly Thursday, but the reality is that I haven’t had a chance to sit down to paint until tonight.  And, well, you’re getting 11pm lighting as well, so bear with me

This is one of the girls I sketched out during my trip to Florida.  Having trouble with a name…any ideas?  (I like to end with “girl” – note-taking girl?  open heart girl?)
